This was a tour and photo trip.  A pretty cave overall, on a relatively quiet day for this cenote.  Turned on air.

Hazel Barton swims in Sac ActunOn the first day of the new year (2001), Hazel and I decided to visit Sac Actun and do a cave dive from the Grand Cenote.  This cenote is normally very crowded, but since today was a recovery day (from New Years Eve) for most people, it was relatively quiet.  The cenote entrance  closed early That day, so we got our gear together and headed into the cave.

Hazel Barton in sidemount passage

After jumping off of the main line, there was some nice passage to swim through that was perfect for side mount gear.  Hazel follows the line through it with ease.

There were quite a few nice formations scattered about the cave.......

Jim Olsen picks up the reel in Sac Actun

After reaching our 1/3 mark on air, the dive was turned and it was time to pick up our reel and head on out of the cave.

Formations in Sac Actun

Of course there was still colorful formations to enjoy in the passage as we went along.

Jim Olsen nears the cavern zone in Sac ActunAs I approached the entrance of the cenote, where our primary line was tied off, we could spot many of the snorkelers enjoying the view of the cave lit up with our lights.

Hazel Barton near stalagmite in Sac ActunWe performed our safety stop out of the reach of the snorkelers by some formations in the cavern area.  This was a beautiful cave dive for the first day of the year.   Hopefully, it will be followed by many more.
