Did a basic tour around the cave and took photos. No particular goal beyond a little bit of lead pushing off of the sides, and photography. Turned on diver getting cold.
I went cave diving, on the last day of the year 2000, with Dan Lins (above), and Hazel
Barton (below) to have pretty much a relaxing tourist type trip to sort out the gear and
get re-acclimated to the cave dive environment.
We swam back a ways into the cave, following the main line, and jumped off to a side
passage to do a little bit of exploring. Here Dan Lins and myself are swimming
through the passages of Actun Koh.
There are quite a few nice formations on both the ceilings and floor of this cave.
It is so much easier to swim through a passage like this, then it would be to try
and navigate this maze of delicate formations, if there were no water.
Above, Hazel is passing through the halocline (a layer where the salt water and fresh
water ride on top of one another). The fuzziness is caused by the mixing of the salt
and fresh water as you swim through it. This can reduce visibility to the point
where it looks as if someone has smeared Vaseline onto your mask. The halocline was
very shallow here (about 15 feet or so deep), since this cave is fairly close to the
ocean.
Near the end of the dive, I decided to check out a small hole in the floor to see if it went anywhere.
After squeezing through, it rapidly closed down into some breakdown, but was a fun squeeze none the less. Another good day of diving with friends. We had such a good time that we decided to stay for a cave dive on the first day of the new year as well.
